October 1888. Van Gogh has just rented the Yellow House in Arles, the first home that is truly his own, and he paints his own bedroom to celebrate it. He tells Theo the picture should express absolute rest and sleep: flat colour, no shadows, the simple furniture of a simple life.

The perspective feels tilted because the room itself was crooked, wedged into the corner of the house. Van Gogh loved the painting so much he made three versions of it. Weeks after finishing the first, his breakdown and the incident with Gauguin ended his dream of the Yellow House. The bedroom remains the most intimate image he ever made, a self-portrait with no figure in it.

Bedroom in Arles by Vincent van Gogh presents a simple, intimate view of the artist’s own bedroom in the Yellow House in Arles. The scene is composed with clean lines and minimal objects, including a wooden bed, small furniture, and a few personal items such as chairs, paintings, and a mirror.

The colors are soft yet expressive, with calming blues, warm yellows, and gentle greens creating a sense of comfort and quiet. The perspective is slightly tilted and flattened, giving the room a dreamlike and almost childlike quality rather than strict realism.

Van Gogh intended this painting to evoke rest and tranquility, offering a sense of peace and stability. Despite its simplicity, the room feels deeply personal, reflecting both his desire for calm and the emotional sensitivity behind his work.
