August 1888. Van Gogh paints sunflowers in a race against their own wilting, working from sunrise each day because the flowers died so fast. They are meant as decoration for the bedroom of Paul Gauguin, whose arrival in Arles he awaits like a disciple awaiting a master.
He paints yellow on yellow on yellow, a technical dare almost no painter had attempted, using the new chrome pigments of the industrial age. Gauguin, not a man given to praise, considered the Sunflowers a perfect page of an essential painter and asked for one as a gift. The series is now scattered across museums in London, Amsterdam, Munich, Tokyo, and Philadelphia, and no complete set can ever be assembled again.
